Information
The Eroding Villas project is designed to be located in Dawlish in the English Riviera. The design takes inspiration from the erosion of the sandstone cliffs which are native to the area. The villas aim to give their inhabitants the experience of this erosion whilst inhabiting them, bringing them closer to nature and making them appreciate the unique character of the location. This is achieved by introducing 'eroding feature walls' in all villas which, with the passing of time, will allow sunlight to penetrate through the eroded areas. Structural stability is not jeopardised as the feature walls are not load bearing. Furthermore, thermal comfort is maintained by introducing performance glass on the inside of the feature wall, thus creating a transparent barrier with the external environment. This behaviour was tested using ice, the effect of which can be seen in the images below. The project enhances the economy of Dawlish by introducing an experience centre on the base of the villas, where visitors can also experience the eroding effect of the walls.
